So you want to be an opal miner ?
Wait ! There are a few things you should know.
If you are planning to peg a claim within the Coober Pedy, Mintabie or Andamooka Proclaimed Precious Stones Fields, read on.
If you are planning to peg a claim on Lambina Station, read on.
  Make sure you have a current Precious Stones Prospecting Permit.
Firstly you need a Precious Stones Prospecting Permit (PSPP)
An application for a permit must be made at an office of the Mining Registrar. A permit is valid for a period of one year. The Mining Registrar has office in Adelaide, Andamooka, Coober Pedy, Mintabie and Marla.


You are now ready to peg your Precious Stones tenement
Small Claim...................................50 x 50 m
Large Claim................................50 x 100 m
Extra Large .............................100 x 200 m
Opal Development Lease.........200 x 200 m

Notice of Pegging
When a claim is pegged out a notice of pegging must be personally lodged no later than 5pm on the next working day at the nearest office of the Mining Registrar to that field.(Note a notice of pegging is not required for an opal development lease.)



Registration
An application for registration of a claim must be made personally at the nearest office of the Mining Registrar to that field, within 14 days after the day of pegging. The application must be accompanied by the prescribed fee.

Small Precious Stones Claim...............$18.80
Large Precious Stones Claim..............$38.00
Extra Large Precious Stones Claim.....$54.00
Opal Development Lease...................$60.00

Registration of a claim is valid for three months from the date of lodging the application, and may be renewed for a further twelve months.
Registration of an opal development lease is valid for three months from the date of notice from a Mining Registrar. An opal development lease can not be renewed.
Notice of Entry
To obtain the authority to enter onto Lambina Station, you must give the owners of the Station at least 21 days notice, on the prescribed form, of your intention to enter onto the land to prospect or mine. The form must be validated by an authorized person from an office of the Mining Registrar. The notice must be served personally or by post.

You st be a member of the South Australian Opal Miners Association Inc. - SAOMAI (au$50)

You must sign a Deed of Consent (au$100)
You must sign a Deed of Consent which binds you to the Lambina Native Title Mining Agreement which which was negotiated between SAOMAI (on behalf of it's members) and the traditional owners of the land, the Antakarinja and the Yunkunyatjara people.

Pegging your claim
Once you have completed the above, you are ready to peg your Precious Stones claim.

An application to register a precious stones claim at Lambina must be made personally at the Marla office of the Mining Registrar.
